  • 2013 SHELBY GT500 PROTOTYPE SELLS FOR $300,000

    23 Jan 2012 | 8:38 am
Although we've had a quite a bit of Shelby news lately, this story was too hard to ignore. Recently, Ford Motor Company announced it would be auctioning off a very special Shelby GT500 durability prototype at this year's Barrett-Jackson's Westworld auction in Scottsdale Arizona. The car in question was originally built back in 2007 as an engineering mule (one of the earliest GT500s we might add with updated 2010 model year styling). The car was then updated to 2013 specs and flogged around Sebring International Raceway at speeds of some 150 mph for 24 hours to ensure that all systems on the…
  • SHELBY AMERICAN CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

    16 Jan 2012 | 10:46 am
It's hard to believe that five decades have passed since iconic Texan Carroll Shelby officially formed the company that bears his name. Starting out by shoehorning American Ford V8s into small British AC sports cars, to create the hairy (and competitive) Cobras, he followed up with a range of hopped up Mustangs that gave Ford a competitive edge against rivals in SCCA racing, as well as bolstering that automaker's performance image on the street. There is absolutely no question that Shelby left an indelible mark on American car culture, one that continues to this very day. And in celebration…
  • SPEED GIVING AWAY GT500 IN HAGGERTY FANTASY BID

    31 Dec 2011 | 8:32 pm
As part of this year's Barrett-Jackson collector car auction at Westworld, in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale, Speed TV, which will be broadcasting 40 hours live coverage of the event, will also be giving away a new Shelby GT500 for the Haggerty Fantasy Bid Game and Sweepstakes. The car in question, is actually a one-of-a-kind Racing Champions Special Edition, boasting upgrades such as a Ford Racing/Whipple supercharger (helping boost power from 550 to approximately 750 hp); a C&R cooling system, 3.5-inch aluminum driveshaft, cosmetic enhancements, (including traditional Shelby style scoops…
  • NEW 1-PIECE CARBON FIBER DRIVESHAFT FOR 2005-10 MUSTANG GTS

    31 Dec 2011 | 8:31 am
When it was introduced, the S197 chassis Mustang represented a tremendous improvement over the antiquated Fox 4 (1994-04) models. It was tighter and much more track capable than its predecessor out the box. However, one drawback was weight. On average, 2005-10 Mustangs are around 200-300 lbs heavier than their forebears, so for racers, any weight savings that can be realized are most welcomed. An obvious one concerns the car's two-piece factory driveshaft, which on its own weighed close to 45 lbs. It wasn't long before various aftermarket manufacturers started offering one piece, lighter and…
  • DYNACORN INTRODUCES 1967 MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE BODY

    29 Dec 2011 | 11:54 am
Several months ago when, Dynacorn International Inc. released it's first reproduction body shell catering to early (1965-66) Mustangs, namely a convertible piece, it seemed logical that perhaps a 2+2 fastback version for early cars would materialize soon after. However, we've yet to see one surface despite persistent hints and rumors. What we have seen emerge over the holiday period however, is this, a 1967 convertible reproduction body. This is perhaps significant, since Dynacorn's first complete reproduction shell in the Mustang world was the '67 Fastback. True to form, the '67 convertible…

  • engine RPM at various speeds?

    sirhawkeye
    28 Jan 2012 | 12:49 am
I just wanted to check something on my car... make sure my RPMs are about normal. So, here are my numbers: In town, around 35 mph, the engine runs around 1500 RPM. At about 55 MPH, the engine turns about 2,000 RPM At 70 MPh on the highway, it turns about 2500-2700 RPM. (55 and 70 MPH I think are in 6th gear, at 35 MPH the car seems to be in 5th gear, a bit odd to me personally.) Do these numbers sound a little high? I've noticed my car can actually be in 6th gear (not using SelectShift at all) by the time it hits 40 MPH in some cases. Is this normal? My 2010 Focus didn't turn as fast as my…
  • Seat protectors for heated cloth seats

    sirhawkeye
    28 Jan 2012 | 12:45 am
Any suggestions on seat covers / protectors that are suitable for use with seats that are heated. My focus has the winter package, so I have the heated cloth seats. The manual says not to use them ,but I think they're mainly concerned with thick cloth seat covers reflecting heat downward at the heating coil. I just want something that will minimize the wear on the seat, and to keep small stains (from small spills, etc) contained if possible. Any suggestions? I don't want to risk damaging the seat heaters though.
  • Anyone get an extended warranty on their '12 Focus?

    sirhawkeye
    28 Jan 2012 | 12:40 am
Did anyone get the FordESP extended warranty on their 2012 Focus? Considering the transmission issues I've experienced (and so has many others), I'm contemplating getting the basic extended warranty that will cover the transmission and engine (block and internal parts). Normally, I wouldn't get an extended warranty, but with all of the issues that have arisen regarding the dual-clutch trans, and the experiences I've had with it, I'm seriously thinking about it. It would run me about $1000, but that's less than replacing a transmission (i was thinking of doing 6 years/100,000 miles, because…

  • Newsday Article Pays Homage to the Late Bunkie Knudsen

    27 Jan 2012 | 1:59 pm
Today I came across a great article on Newsday's website titled, "Bunkie Knudsen, muscle car pioneer."  Knudsen, who passed away in 1998, was a successful automotive executive who is credited with helping push through a larger Mustang at Ford in the late 60s. This resulted in an awesome display of power, and the iconic Boss Mustang (Thank you Larry Shinoda!).  It's been reported that designer Shinoda selected the name "Boss" as a way to pay homage to Knudsen. My favorite line? "Knudsen was a visionary, someone who would be remembered by one-word nameplates such as GTO, as in…
  • New Television Series Alcatraz Features 1968 GT390 Mustang

    25 Jan 2012 | 8:09 pm
I love it when old meets new. Take the recently launched Fox television series, "Alcatraz", for example. The main character of the show, Detective Rebecca Madsen, drives a sharp looking 1968 GT390 through the streets of San Francisco in search of bad guys. Remind you of someone? I'm thinking Lt. Frank Bullitt, as portrayed by the late-great Steve McQueen in the classic 1968 movie release "Bullitt". The car makes its first big appearance in episode 3, titled "Kit Nelson". Ford is a high profile sponsor of the show, which probably explains the in-show Mustang placement. You'll hear no…
  • Another Barrett-Jackson Auction Come and Gone

    23 Jan 2012 | 8:03 am
Well folks, another Barrett-Jackson Auction has come and gone. No doubt, it was a great show in Scottsdale. In addition to an extreme case of "The Mondays", I'm having serious auto auction withdrawals. Combine that with the rainy weather we're having here in Los Angeles, and you've got a guy who's wishing he was back in Scottsdale! On Sunday, the Playboy Pink 1973 Ford Mustang Convertible (Lot#3050) I mentioned in my preview sold for $37,000, with all proceeds benefiting The Mad Girls Inc., an organization helping individuals identify and implement projects to benefit a cause or humanitarian…
  • Saturday Update From Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale

    21 Jan 2012 | 5:56 pm
It was another action packed day at the Barrett-Jackson auction here in Scottsdale. In addition to seeing numerous Mustangs cross the block, I spent some quality time with the folks at Galpin Auto Sports, discussing their 2012 Galpin/SPX Charity Wide Body Mustang, which sold for $160,000 on Friday night. We also talked about their custom Boss 302-X Mustang, which was on display at the event. What a looker. While making the rounds, I came across the one-of-one 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 durability car that was auctioned today for $300,000. Unfortunately, Carroll Shelby was under the weather and…
  • Friday Update From Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale

    20 Jan 2012 | 12:18 pm
It's been an exciting day here at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction. Looking back, on Thursday a 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback (Lot# 719) sold for an impressive $242,000. The Mustang was custom built for the ground-up and rotisserie restored with fiberglass from Unique Performance. Today a 2007 Shelby GT-H Convertible Mustang (Lot# 960.5) just sold for $51,700. As I'm writing this, an impressive looking 1970 Boss 302 Mustang (Lot# 961) just sold for $209,000. No doubt, quite a few Mustangs have generated top dollar here at this year's show. Tomorrow I'm scheduled to discuss the 2012…

  • Five Fords Among the Best for the Money for 2012

    Ford in the News
    20 Jan 2012 | 3:12 pm
Ford was the best-selling auto brand in the country in 2011, and as a recent study by U.S. News & World Reports shows, there’s a good reason for that kind of performance: Ford also won the most categories in the publication’s recent rankings of the “Best Cars for the Money 2012.” “The award-winning vehicles have the best combination of praise from car reviewers, lower upfront costs and lower long-term ownership costs than their competition,” according to U.S. News & World Reports. “The winners aren’t just good cars or good values. They’re both.” And for Ford, those…

The big dogs were out in abundance during the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but it was the completely redesigned Ford Fusion that AutoWeek named “Best in Show.” “It’s very rare for a midsize sedan to win Best in Show,” said Autoweek editor Wes Raynal. “I think it’s the first of a lot of awards the Fusion is going to win this year.” In fact, helping fulfill Raynal’s prophecy, the Fusion also received the much-coveted EyesOn Design recognition from the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology during the show—no mean feat considering its fellow finalists…

Among that second pair will be a peppy 1.6-liter…

The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 is kicking off the new year the same way it ended the last—by kicking the competition to the curb: The automaker’s CEO—Chief Excitement Object—recently received a Popular Mechanics Auto Excellence Award as the top 2012 choice in the performance car category.
